The Kandy to Ella highland railway appears on more serious travellers’ lists than almost any other rail journey in Asia. Not a luxury train – a local service with open carriage doors, tea estates falling away on both sides, waterfalls appearing between tunnels and a valley floor hundreds of metres below. The Nanu Oya to Ella section specifically is the most dramatic, and is positioned as the primary experience wherever the full route isn’t possible.
