Five cave shrines cut from a granite outcrop in the 1st century BC, in continuous use and renovation for two thousand years. Cave 2 has the finest painted ceiling in Sri Lanka – murals covering every surface in imagery spanning twenty centuries of Buddhist devotion. The diffused afternoon light entering the cave mouth creates ideal conditions for interior scenic without flash.
